Widely known as “the hotel where you can meet the childlike ‘zashikiwarashi’ spirit”, Ryokufuso burned to the ground in 2009 but will reopen in May 2016. The outside will look much as it did before, and the “Enju no ma” room, where many guests caught a glimpse of the zashikiwarashi who would bring them good luck, will be reproduced in the same “shared” location.
Online reservations are being accepted from April 1.

Samurai no Yu Obonai

The inn ran by an well-known fishmonger in town shows you a lot of fun to see.

Samurai no Yu Obonai is a hot spring hotel that’s also well-known locally as a fishmonger. As well as fresh seafood from the nearby port of Hachinohe, the hotel also boasts local cuisine prepared by the chef using local Shorthorn wagyu beef, free-range chicken and millet.
The hot water at the hotel is drawn from “tama no yu”, one of several source springs in Kindaichi Onsen which first opened 380 years ago. The water quality is simple spring water - clear, colorless and odorless. Enjoy the onsen atmosphere in the bathtub, where traces of the hot springs can be felt and which overflows with the soft-feeling water.
Samurai no Yu Obonai was built about 80 years ago, giving it a “retro” Showa-era feeling. Repeated extensions have made it a bit maze-like. Craftsmanship that is rare these days still remains in the old wing. There are charming sights to see, such as the glass floor of the “Komoan” arbor springing up from among the seasonal flowers adorning the garden, or the elaborate toilet. In one corner of the hotel, tales of guests’ encounters with the childlike “zashikiwarashi” spirit have been collected. Reading them is thrilling—it will heighten your expectation of experiencing it for yourself.

Kitaguni Ryokan

Boasting a skin-softening bath surrounded by boulders

Kitaguni Ryokan was founded in the 1960s. The inn is known for its connection with the author Tetsuo Miura. Being related to the founder, Miura gave the inn the name “Kitaguni”. It now contains a display of his books, including the Akutagawa Prize-winning “Shinobugawa” as well as photos of the author.
Kitaguni boasts a bath surrounded by boulders where you can stretch out comfortably. The source water is lukewarm, so it is artificially heated, but is said to soften the skin.
Each room is decorated with rustic prints. Soak in the artistic atmosphere and make yourself comfortable. The best part of travel is the food, and Kitaguni is proud of their commitment to home-cooked meals using local produce and seafood delivered straight from the port at Hachinohe. Taste their seasonal dishes, such as piping-hot monkfish or cod hotpots in the cold days of winter.

Ryokan Senyokan

Seasonal dishes and a calm, relaxing hot spring

Senyokan opened 50 years ago in Kindaichi Onsen Village, famous for the legend of the childlike “zashikiwarashi” spirit. Both sightseeing and business guests come here to relax, and are warmly welcomed to this hot spring inn by the owner. She also answers questions about her strange experiences with the zashikiwarashi. There is a ping-pong table, so you can also enjoy “onsen-takkyu” or “hot spring ping pong”.
The bathroom, where the quality of the simple spring water is gentle on the skin and washes away fatigue, is open 24 hours a day. You can even drop in for a bath at 9:00 AM without advance notice. Senyokan also has a reservation system, enabling you to reserve the bath for your group, which is ideal for enjoying the hot spring with just your family.
Don’t hesitate to enjoy both morning and evening meals in your room. Local seasonal ingredients are combined in local dishes such as “tsuttsuke” and “hitttsumi”, which go well with the region's delicious “Nanbu Bijin" sake.

Hotel Kintaichi

Large meals and a hot spring with a lovely view at reasonable rates

Hotel Kintaichi is a Japanese-style hotel with hot springs and large meals at reasonable rates. It was built on the banks of the Mabechigawa River some 40 years ago. The large interior offers a glimpse into the hustle and bustle of bygone days, with a nostalgic style that will take you back to the 1960s. During the cold winters, kotatsu (low tables with quilts and built-in heaters), indispensable for life in the north country, are provided in every room. You’ll really feel like you’re back in your hometown.
The hotel boasts a lovely view from the large bath full of smooth hot spring water. Soaking in slightly lukewarm water while gazing at the view of the river below gradually relaxes your body. Enjoy your onsen time to the full. First, take a bath while it’s still light outside.
The next thing to look forward to is your meal, which is so large you’ll wonder whether you’ll be able to finish it. In season you can enjoy salt-grilled ayu (sweetfish) caught in the Mabechi-gawa River, it is very popular with fishers during the fishing season.

Inside the onsen building is a hatchery where ayu are raised using the onsen waters, and you can enjoy the feeling of a large ryokan of the pastEnjoy the view of the river flowing below as the tiredness from your journey is washed away in the large bath. Inside the onsen building is a hatchery where ayu are raised using the spring waters, and you can enjoy the feeling of a large ryokan of the past. The Kindaichi Onsen used the hot spring waters for a hatchery and fish farm, and you can enjoy grilled ayu in season.

Spa Dome

Why the weird shape? The unique dome-shaped bath house

As the name says, Spa dome is a hot-spring hotel whose bath house has a unique domed shape. A shiba-inu dog named Sakura-chan will come to greet you.
The skylight and geometrically-patterned ceiling of the bathroom make it feel somewhat like the space station. Besides a bath of low-alkali simple water, there is an electric bath, a far infrared sauna and a cold-water bath. The open-air bath in the garden is for men only, offering a complete sense of spaciousness. Day-trippers are also welcome.
Ninohe is known as the “millet town”, and you can taste the five-grain ramen unique to the area at the hotel’s restaurant, “Karen”. The mouth-feel and body of the noodles, kneaded from foxtail millet, Japanese barnyard millet, common millet, wheat and amaranthus, are just right.
